With the advent of LASIK, myopias up to -12 dioptres, astigmatism up to 6 dioptres and hyperopias up to +6 dioptres can be corrected with a degree of predictability hitherto unequalled by the results of other refractive surgery techniques. Better still, this surgery is practically painless and produces a functional visual result by the following day.
"LASIK" is an abbreviation of "LAser in SItu Keratomileusis". It is a refractive surgical technique in which Excimer laser treatment is performed under a protective layer of corneal tissue. This flap consists of the epithelium, the Bowman membrane and a layer of corneal stroma, and has a total thickness of 160 microns. The Excimer laser has a wavelength of 193 nm and makes it possible to alter micrometrically the corneal surface and correct most refractive errors: myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism.
