Eye drops for irritation

In the event of extreme irritation of the eye due to infection caused by the pterygium, treatment can be started with drops and/or corticosteroids to reduce inflammation and infection.

In the event of chronic irritation caused by the pterygium, extreme malformation of the cornea (astigmatism) or growth over the pupil edge, corrective surgery is necessary: this is called a pterygium excision. In most cases, the pterygium as well as its base are removed, but a conjunctiva transplant is also conducted in the nasal conjunctiva. This transplant is prelevated at the top, under the top eyelid, and is attached on the nasal side using a number of microsutures (stitches).
