The operation

The surgery is performed on an out-patient basis under topical anaesthesia, i.e. by means of drops, and lasts 15 minutes. This technique can be seen as a modern form of PRK. First, the epithelial layer is detached by using an alcohol solution and is then rolled up. Next, the corneal tissue is vaporised by the excimer laser, which reshapes the surface of the cornea so as to change its refractive power. The epithelial layer is then repositioned under a bandage contact lens.
